How to Back Up WhatsApp Chats (Android & iPhone)

Your phone slips out of your hand and the screen goes black — permanently. When the panic fades, the real question hits: were your WhatsApp chats backed up? Years of family photos, work conversations, voice notes from people who matter — all of it lives in WhatsApp, and unless you've set up backups, it's gone with the phone.

The good news is that setting up a WhatsApp backup takes about three minutes, and after that it runs on its own. The bad news is that most people only discover the backup settings after they've already lost something. This guide covers both Android and iPhone with exact menu paths, explains how automatic backups work, shows how to restore chats on a new phone, and flags the one privacy setting almost everyone should turn on.

How WhatsApp Backups Work

WhatsApp stores your chats on your phone by default — not on WhatsApp's servers. A backup copies your messages, photos, videos, and voice notes to cloud storage: Google Drive on Android, iCloud on iPhone. If you switch phones or reinstall WhatsApp, you can pull everything back from that cloud copy.

Important detail: the backup is separate from your phone's regular cloud backup. Your phone might be backing up app data to iCloud or Google, but WhatsApp needs its own backup switched on inside the app. If you've never opened WhatsApp's backup settings, assume you don't have one.

Back Up WhatsApp on Android (Google Drive)

Before you start, make sure you're signed in to a Google account on your phone and have enough free space in Google Drive. Note that since 2024, WhatsApp backups count against your Google Drive storage quota — the free 15 GB is shared with Gmail and Google Photos, so large video-heavy backups can fill it up.

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap the three-dot menu (top right).
  2. Tap Settings, then Chats, then Chat backup.
  3. Tap Google Account and choose the account to store the backup. If none is listed, tap Add account.
  4. Tap Back up to Google Drive and choose a frequency: Daily is the safest option for most people.
  5. Under Back up using, choose Wi-Fi so backups don't eat your mobile data (or Wi-Fi or cellular if you want backups even without Wi-Fi).
  6. Toggle Include videos on if you want videos backed up too — this makes backups much larger, so leave it off if your Drive is nearly full.
  7. Tap the green Back up button to run your first backup immediately.

The first backup can take a long time — potentially an hour or more if you have years of chats with photos and videos. Keep your phone on Wi-Fi and charging. Later backups are incremental and much faster.

Back Up WhatsApp on iPhone (iCloud)

On iPhone, WhatsApp backs up to iCloud. You'll need iCloud Drive turned on and enough iCloud storage — Apple's free tier is only 5 GB, which is not enough for most people's WhatsApp history, so many iPhone users end up needing the paid iCloud+ storage.

  1. First, confirm iCloud Drive is on: open the iPhone Settings app, tap your name at the top, tap iCloud, and make sure iCloud Drive is switched on.
  2. Open WhatsApp and tap Settings (bottom right).
  3. Tap Chats, then Chat Backup.
  4. Tap Auto Backup and choose Daily.
  5. Toggle Include Videos according to your storage situation.
  6. Tap Back Up Now to create your first backup immediately.

One iPhone quirk worth knowing: WhatsApp on iOS backs up over both Wi-Fi and cellular by default, and there's no Wi-Fi-only option in the app. If your backup is huge, it can chew through mobile data — run the first backup on Wi-Fi and keep an eye on it.

Turn On End-to-End Encrypted Backup

This is the setting most people miss, and it matters. By default, your WhatsApp chats are end-to-end encrypted on your phone, but the cloud backup on Google Drive or iCloud is not — meaning Google or Apple could theoretically access it, and so could anyone who gets into your cloud account. WhatsApp offers an optional encrypted backup that locks the cloud copy with a password or 64-digit encryption key that only you know.

  1. Go to Settings → Chats → Chat backup (Android) or Settings → Chats → Chat Backup (iPhone).
  2. Tap End-to-end encrypted backup.
  3. Tap Turn on, then choose Password (easier to remember) or 64-digit encryption key (maximum security).
  4. Create your password and confirm it. WhatsApp will ask you to verify it — write it down somewhere safe, like a password manager.

Critical warning: if you forget this password or lose the encryption key, nobody — not WhatsApp, not Google, not Apple — can recover your backup. It's genuinely unrecoverable. Only enable this if you'll store the password safely.

How to Restore a WhatsApp Backup on a New Phone

Restoring is automatic — WhatsApp detects the backup during setup:

  1. Install WhatsApp on the new phone and verify the same phone number (backups are tied to your number).
  2. On Android, sign in to the same Google account you used for the backup. On iPhone, sign in to the same Apple ID with iCloud Drive on.
  3. During setup, WhatsApp will find the backup and ask "Restore" — tap it and wait.
  4. Your chats appear first; media (photos and videos) downloads in the background afterward.

If WhatsApp doesn't offer a restore, the usual causes are: wrong Google account/Apple ID, a different phone number, or the backup being too old — Google Drive deletes WhatsApp backups that haven't been updated in over a year.

Common Backup Problems and Fixes

Frequently Asked Questions

Does WhatsApp back up automatically?

Only if you set it up. A fresh install has automatic backup switched off. Follow the steps above and choose Daily frequency — after that, it runs on its own whenever the conditions are right (Wi-Fi, charging, idle).

Are deleted messages included in the backup?

Only messages that existed when the backup ran. If you delete a message and the next backup runs afterward, it's gone from the backup too. Backups are snapshots, not archives of everything ever sent.

Can I back up WhatsApp without Google Drive or iCloud?

On Android, yes — WhatsApp also saves a local backup to your phone's storage every day (in the WhatsApp/Databases folder), which you can copy to a computer manually. This doesn't help if the phone is lost, though. On iPhone there is no local backup option; iCloud is the only route.

How do I check when my last backup ran?

Open WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat backup (Android) or Chat Backup (iPhone). The screen shows the date, time, and size of your last backup at the top. If it says "Never," you have no backup.
